The year is 2025 and a corporation called The Union has created the perfect market. In what can only be described as a combination of the banking and health insurance industries, The Union provides artificial organs to people in need…for a price. You apply for an organ, which is “sold” to you at an insanely high interest rate that you’re guaranteed to agree to because if you don’t, well you die.
If you can’t make the payments, which you can’t because the system is designed that way, a repo man will come for you after 3 months of non-payment to take back the property of The Union–one way or the other.
For this trip through the scary but somewhat cool and interesting world of futuristic organ repossessions we will be accompanied by Remy (Law). Remy is a world-class repo man for The Union. He and his partner and best friend Jake (Whitaker) reclaim property better than anyone, which happens to be problematic for Remy’s wife. After a gruesome repossession in front of the family home, Remy’s wife leaves.
His life falling down around him, Remy decides that he’d rather be a salesman for The Union. The last repossession assigned to him is the heart of a music producer (RZA) that he idolizes. He allows the musician to finish his final song before repossessing the organ. This is where Repo Men really gets interesting. During the heart repossession Remy is injured and falls into a coma. When he wakes up, Jake informs him that his heart is very damaged and that he will need an artificial heart to stay alive.
Remy reluctantly agrees to take the heart and return to his life. Unfortunately his job as salesman doesn’t allow him enough money to keep up with his payments to The Union, but he’s torn about being a repo man when he is now just like the people from whom he reclaims Union property.
Jake takes his best friend to a part of town filled with people running from The Union and the Repo Men in hopes that he can perform a repossession and remain in the good graces of the company. Remy is unwilling and unable to repossess so Jake does what any best friend would do, he leaves him behind to be attacked by men scheduled for repossessions with Remy.
On the outskirts of town, where many of the past due accounts live, Remy runs into a singer he met at a bar, Beth. Beth is a past due drug addict with several body parts from The Union. They live together in a ratty motel room where Remy types the tale of his life as one of The Union’s Repo Men and then as one of the repossessed.
What’s great about Repo Men is the story line itself. As a movie buff, I can’t recall any film like this in recent memory and that’s exactly what made it stand out. Repo Men is about more than people clumsily removing rented artificial organs for profit. Remy loved his job as a repo man, but more importantly he was good at it which is rare and hard to find, and that is the heart of his struggle.
On the run from his company and his best friend, Remy decides that the only recourse is to destroy The Union. His mission clear, Remy gives the story of his conversion to his son Peter before heading to Union headquarters with Beth. The plan for revenge will have you anxious for an outcome and hopeful that Remy successfully destroys the corporation.
Where Repo Men gets it right is the ability of the film maker to juxtapose current events like the housing, financial and health care crises into one cohesive tale that has moviegoers rooting for Remy and Beth. Despite Whitaker’s inherent likability, you’ll root against him as he tracks Remy through Union headquarters.
Repo Men is a good time at the movies period. You can’t help but love Jude Law against a large corporation that puts people in the untenable position of deciding whether to live now only to face death when they inevitably fail to make payments. The surprise ending will leave moviegoers with extreme reactions. You’re guaranteed to love it or hate it.
I both loved and hated the ending. I loved it because it was exactly would happen in real life, which incidentally is exactly why it infuriated me as well. There are no happy endings in Repo Men, which again distinguishes it from other futuristic tales where everything wraps up tidily before the end credits. Realists, sci-fi fans, political junkies, and corporatists alike will find different things to love about Repo Men, but they will all love it!

The villages have one Banjar and the men are expected to join one once they get married. Banjar has an estimate membership of 50 to 100 families and they each have a meeting place of their own which they call the Bale Banjar. This place is where the meetings are usually held and this is also where the gamelan orchestras and drama groups practice.
Every stage of Balinese life has ceremonies and rituals which are called the Manusa Yadnya. The first of these ceremonies takes place even before birth, followed by another ceremony after the birth wherein the afterbirth is buried with the proper offerings. The first major ceremony is held halfway through the baby’s first Balinese year of 210 days.
Balinese people basically has four first names and these are Wayan or Putu for the first child, Mane or Kadek for the second child, Nyoman or Komangfor the third, and Ketut for the fourth. The preceding children will be given the same names following the same order. It can also be noted that Bali has many children. This is because they love children. After the ceremonies of babyhood is another one which will mark the stages of childhood and puberty. This includes the important tooth-filing ceremony.
Everyone in Bali is expected to get married and have a family. Marriages usually take place at a young age. Unlike other Asian countries, marriages are not arranged. Instead, they are divided in two forms, the mapadik and the ngorod. The mapadik is the respectable form which requires the family of the man to formally visit the family of the girl to propose marriage. Ngorod, on the other hand, is the elopement. This does not come as a surprise to the people because they are practical people. The couple could go and hide somewhere so as to avoid being found by the girls’ parents. They will jus re-emerge for the official marriage to take place.
